One of the very unexpected surprises of this whole thing has been all the goodbyes. Letters, gifts, inside jokes, goodbye hugs, coffee dates,etc. Its kind of like attending your own funeral. People say all sorts of nice things about you, although maybe that's because they think it really will be the last time they see us. If so, forget all the niceties, just give us cash and we'll be sure to donate it to our favorite charity for you :)

I've been through this scene a few times in my life. When I was single it always included confessions from guys who never had the courage to ask me on a date or tell me how they felt. There are also the people who just stop talking to you the minute they hear you are leaving. I guess an attempt to spare themselves the goodbye? And then there are the jealous ones who can only see the up side to your adventure and think you lead a charmed life. I have never been sure how to handle those either.
